1 Million Cups Program coming to Williston March 1

1 Million Cups will feature presentations from two early-stage startups followed by a question-and-answer period with the audience.
A new program for entrepreneurs and business startups is coming to Williston! The first 1 Million Cups meeting will be held March 1, at 8:30 a.m. in the Teton Lounge on the Williston State College campus.
1 Million Cups (1MC) is a grassroots program that supports early-stage business owners. Williston Economic Development is leading the effort to start the program in its hometown. Executive Director Shawn Wenko said he was notified in early January that Williston's application had been approved. "One of the steps that we have taken towards fostering the entrepreneurial spirit was seeking to become a 1 Million Cups Community . We are happy to report the City of Williston has been accepted," said Wenko.  Read More

WED, SBDC mentor Students during Job Shadow Day

Williston High School students fanned out into the workplace on Thursday, Feb. 2 for Job Shadow Day. The annual program allows high school juniors to explore a career by spending half of a day in the workplace. Viktoria Chinquist and Misslynn Spellman job shadowed at Williston Economic Development and the Small Business Development Center. WSC seeks to grow Petroleum Automation and Control Program

Williston State College officials are attending the 2017 Mentor-Connect Outreach and Technical Assistance Workshop in New Orleans, LA February 1-3, 2017. Williston's Safflower Technologies seeks APUC Grant to complete Study for Processing Plant

Safflower Technologies International is seeking nearly $28,000 to complete a study for an oilseed processing facility.
The North Dakota Agricultural Products Utilization Commission (APUC) will review funding requests for nine projects totaling $693,000 at its quarterly meeting February 21 in Bismarck. APUC is a program of the North Dakota Department of Commerce that administers grant programs for research and development of new and expanded uses for North Dakota agricultural products. Safflower Technologies International (Williston) is requesting $27,775 to complete a study for a specialty non-GMO oilseed processing facility with cold press or expeller press system technology for a range of oilseed processing and refining capabilities. Read More

CVB seeks Artisans to Paint Benches For Band Day Auction

The bench auction will help raise funds for future Band Day programming.
The Williston Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Band Day Committee are pleased to announce a new fundraising project. Ten benches, crafted by the Williston High School woodworking class, will be available for purchase. Buyers will be tasked with painting the benches for an auction on May 13 at Harmon Park. Dickinson Hotel Occupancy Rates mixed in 2016

Hotels in Dickinson saw an increase in visitors over the summer months in 2016 compared with 2015. Terri Thiel, executive director of the Dickinson Convention and Visitors Bureau, said that hotel occupancy was down overall in 2016 compared with 2015's year-end occupancy rate, which Thiel attributes to a slow first quarter in 2016. Greg Schuetze and Justin Voll will be running for the position that was vacated when Brent Sanford was elected North Dakota Lieutenant Governor. Burgum appoints Wahpeton Entrepreneur Commerce Commissioner

Gov. Doug Burgum on Friday appointed GIANT Sunflower Seeds co-founder Jay Schuler to lead the North Dakota Department of Commerce, citing Schuler's successful track record as a job creator and entrepreneur for more than 40 years. "Jay Schuler's impressive background of incubating and launching 15 startup companies spanning five continents and deep understanding of value-added agriculture will be highly valuable as we seek to diversify North Dakota's economy and reinvent state government," Burgum said. Schuler will assume his new role as commerce commissioner on Feb. 27. Read More

Tufte to lead ND Health Department

Health management executive and former critical care nurse Mylynn Tufte will serve as North Dakota's next State Health Officer, bringing an extensive clinical, business and technology background to the top leadership role in the Department of Health, Gov. Doug Burgum announced Wednesday. The state health officer is appointed by the governor to be the Health Department's chief administrative officer and is also a member of the governor's cabinet. CHI St. Alexius Exec named Director of Human Services

Gov. Doug Burgum made his second new cabinet appointment of the week Friday by naming a new head of the North Dakota Department of Human Services, the state's largest agency. Christopher Jones was tapped for the role Friday and begins his new job on Feb. 27, according to a Friday morning release from Burgum's office. Jones is currently senior vice president of business and development at CHI St Alexius. Read More

The new program for early-stage startups will be held at 8:30 a.m. in the Teton Lounge on the campus of Williston State College. Two individuals or groups will present their businesses followed by a question and answer period with the audience. Coffee will be provided by Smiling Moose Deli.
